She Grew Up As A Mormon And Was Abused But Today Some Say She’s The Most Beautiful Woman On The Planet

Behind the bright smile and high-energy performances, Julianne Hough carried a secret pain for decades.

Today, she’s known as a powerhouse performer — a three-time Primetime Emmy nominee, a Dancing with the Stars icon and one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces. But long before the spotlight found her, Hough says her childhood was shaped by trauma few ever knew about.

In 2024, the Utah native publicly revealed for the first time that she was sexually abused at just four years old — a revelation that stunned fans and reshaped how many viewed her journey to stardom.

Speaking candidly during a podcast interview, Hough recalled the moment that changed everything. The abuse, she said, came from a neighbor in her own quiet cul-de-sac — a violation that left lasting emotional scars.

When she finally told her mother, the reaction was immediate and emotional. Her family chose to move away rather than confront the situation publicly — a decision Hough now reflects on with mixed emotions.

Looking back, she acknowledged her mother did what she believed was best at the time: protect her children by removing them from harm. Still, the silence that followed left unanswered questions and unresolved pain.

Growing up in a devout Mormon household added another layer of confusion. Hough has said there was enormous pressure to present a flawless image — one where problems were tucked away behind polished smiles.

“There wasn’t much accountability,” she later explained, admitting that the lack of consequences made the experience even harder to process.

Born in Orem, Utah, the youngest of five siblings, Hough was raised in a family deeply rooted in politics and performance. Her father served as chairman of the Utah Republican Party, while dance became the heartbeat of the household.

From a young age, it was clear she had extraordinary talent.

By nine, she was competing seriously. By ten, her life took another dramatic turn.

After her parents’ divorce, Hough was sent thousands of miles away to London to attend the prestigious Italia Conti Academy. At an age when most children were still playing with toys, she was navigating public transportation alone and training in a demanding adult environment.

She has since described that period as isolating — and at times deeply damaging.

While abroad, Hough says she endured emotional and physical mistreatment, often without parental protection. Instead of confrontation, the response was once again relocation — move forward, don’t look back.

That pattern, she says, taught her to survive by adapting rather than healing.

Even more heartbreaking, Hough revealed that she was pushed into a hyper-sexualized image at an age when she was still very much a child.

“I looked grown long before I felt grown,” she once explained, saying she often felt forced to hide her innocence behind choreography and costumes that didn’t match her emotional maturity.

When she eventually returned to the U.S., life didn’t suddenly improve.

High school brought intense bullying. As the “new girl” with international experience, she stood out — and not in a good way. Teasing, rejection and humiliation followed, even during moments meant to feel joyful.

Yet through it all, dance remained her lifeline.

By her mid-teens, she was winning elite competitions and landing acting roles — including an early appearance in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Her career soon exploded with films like Footloose, Rock of Ages, Safe Haven, and Fox’s live Grease production. But it was Dancing with the Stars that turned her into a household name — first as a champion pro, later as a judge and host.

Offscreen, her personal life often made headlines — from her high-profile romance with Ryan Seacrest to her marriage and eventual divorce from NHL player Brooks Laich.

That difficult chapter ultimately opened the door to healing.

Following the split, Hough says she reconnected deeply with her parents, rebuilding relationships that had long felt fractured. For the first time, she allowed herself to be vulnerable — no performances, no armor.

In recent years, she’s also spoken openly about living with endometriosis, using her platform to raise awareness about a condition that affects millions of women.

Today, Hough says she’s approaching life — and love — differently.

Rather than chasing appearances or expectations, she’s focused on connection, energy and emotional honesty.

After years of silence, survival and strength, Julianne Hough is no longer hiding her story — she’s owning it.

And in doing so, she’s proving that even the brightest stars can rise from the darkest beginnings.
