Did you know dogs don’t just sleep — they worry like us too?

In Finland, old abandoned metro tunnels are being given a second life — not for humans, but for stray dogs. These underground passages, once silent and unused, are now warm, secure shelters equipped with motion-triggered feeders, water dispensers, and insulated resting areas.

The retrofit cleverly uses the tunnels’ existing structure to provide shelter from harsh Nordic winters, while renewable energy systems maintain a constant, safe temperature. Cameras and motion sensors ensure the dogs are fed automatically, reducing human labor while keeping the space hygienic and well-managed.

This initiative highlights how urban infrastructure can be repurposed creatively to support vulnerable animals. By combining technology, warmth, and safety, Finland is providing a humane solution for stray dogs in cities, turning forgotten tunnels into sanctuaries of care and innovation.
