MY PARROT STARTED REPEATING STRANGE WORDS—THEN I REALIZED THEY WEREN’T MINE

I always thought it was cute when Pico picked up little phrases. He’d mimic my laugh, say “Good morning!” when I walked into the kitchen, and occasionally blurt out things like “Where’s my coffee?” in a tone so close to mine it creeped me out.

But about two months ago, he started saying something different.

“Don’t tell her.”

Over and over again. Same hushed tone. Same pause between the words. At first, I thought maybe he picked it up from a movie or something I had playing in the background.

But then it got weirder. Pico would say it even when there was no television or radio on. Just randomly, while sitting on his perch, he’d tilt his head, puff out his chest, and in a voice so soft, almost conspiratorial, he would murmur, “Don’t tell her.”

At first, I tried to brush it off. Birds, especially parrots, were known to mimic random sounds they’d hear, right? But there was something unsettling about how specific those words felt. Something about the tone he used, the way he would say them in a way that almost seemed like he was aware of something, something I wasn’t.

One evening, as I sat on the couch scrolling through my phone, Pico repeated it again, but this time, he added something new:

“Don’t tell her. I’ll fix it.”

That stopped me dead in my tracks. My heart began to race, and I felt an eerie shiver run down my spine. This wasn’t just idle chatter anymore. This was intentional. Pico was trying to communicate something—something that didn’t make sense. It wasn’t like he was just imitating a line from a TV show. These words were too specific, too targeted.

I leaned forward and stared at him, my mind racing. “Pico,” I said softly, as if to test the waters, “what are you trying to tell me?”

He blinked at me, his head cocking to one side, as if he was deciding whether or not to answer. Then, after a beat, he repeated it:

“Don’t tell her. I’ll fix it.”

This time, my stomach flipped over. I felt a cold sweat start to form on the back of my neck. My thoughts immediately went to my fiancé, Rob. Rob and I had been together for five years, and everything had been going well—or so I thought. But as I replayed Pico’s words in my head, my heart started to pound. What was Pico referring to? What did he know?

I shook it off at first. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Maybe he had overheard something Rob had said in passing. Maybe I was overthinking it.

But then, one afternoon, Rob came home late from work. He was acting strangely—distant, distracted. He kept checking his phone, and when I asked about his day, he gave me short answers. I shrugged it off at first. Maybe he was just tired.

But then, that night, as we were lying in bed, the words came out of Pico’s beak again. Clear as day, he repeated it once more:

“Don’t tell her. I’ll fix it.”

Rob froze, his body stiffening next to me. For a split second, I thought I saw him flinch. His eyes darted to Pico’s cage, then back to me, as if caught in the act of something he couldn’t hide anymore.

“Rob,” I said, my voice shaking a little, “what’s going on? Why does Pico keep saying that? What is it?”

Rob hesitated, his gaze flicking to the bird again. For the first time, I saw guilt in his eyes—something I’d never seen before. He opened his mouth to speak, but then shut it again. A long pause filled the room, and in that moment, it felt like the weight of everything was hanging in the air.

Finally, he sighed deeply. “There’s something I need to tell you. I should’ve told you sooner, but I didn’t know how.”

My heart was already racing, but when he said that, the pit in my stomach grew even deeper. “What do you mean?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Rob took a deep breath and sat up in bed. “A few months ago, I made a huge mistake. Something I thought I could fix, but it got out of hand, and I couldn’t stop it. I—”

I held up my hand, my mind already jumping to conclusions. “What do you mean, you made a mistake? What happened?”

He ran his hands through his hair, clearly struggling to find the right words. “I’ve been seeing someone else. I—I never meant for it to go this far, but I didn’t know how to get out of it. I thought I could hide it, fix it, and everything would go back to normal. But it didn’t. It only made things worse.”

The world around me seemed to tilt. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “You… you’ve been seeing someone else? Rob, how could you?”

“I’m so sorry,” he said, his voice cracking. “I never wanted to hurt you. I thought I could handle it, but then it all started to unravel. I know this isn’t something you can forgive easily, but I need you to understand that I never meant for this to happen.”

I felt like my legs were going to give out beneath me. My mind was spinning, and I felt a wave of betrayal wash over me. How had I not seen this coming? How had I ignored the signs? But then, in the back of my mind, I realized something. Pico. He’d been telling me. He’d been trying to tell me all along.

I looked over at Pico, who was sitting quietly on his perch now, as if nothing had happened. My mind raced. Was this some kind of twisted coincidence? Or was Pico somehow aware of something I hadn’t been?

“Rob,” I said, my voice now shaking with a mix of anger and disbelief, “you lied to me. All these years, I trusted you, and you’ve been hiding this from me.”

“I know. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me. It was a mistake, and I want to make it right. I’ll do whatever it takes, but I need you to know the truth. I never wanted to lose you.”

I stood up, pacing around the room. I couldn’t believe it. This was all falling apart. Rob, the man I thought I could trust with everything, had betrayed me in the worst way possible.

But then, a thought occurred to me—a sharp, unsettling thought. Pico. Had he been warning me all along? Had he somehow known before I did?

It was as if the bird had seen through Rob’s lies, had somehow understood what was happening long before I did. That was the only explanation that made sense. Pico wasn’t just mimicking phrases anymore—he was trying to communicate a truth I couldn’t see. It was as if fate had conspired to show me the reality that had been right in front of me all along.

Over the next few days, I took some time to think. Rob begged me to stay, promised to change, to make things right. But I knew I couldn’t stay in a relationship built on lies and betrayal. I couldn’t ignore the fact that Pico had tried to warn me before any of this came to light.

I made the painful decision to end things with Rob. It was hard. It was heartbreaking. But I knew it was the right choice. I had to trust myself—and I had to trust Pico.

As I packed up Rob’s things and watched him leave, I realized that sometimes life works in mysterious ways. Pico’s words, strange as they were, had guided me toward the truth. In a way, he had given me the strength to walk away from a toxic situation I might have stayed in for far too long.

A few months later, I found peace. I started focusing on myself, rebuilding my life, and learning to trust again—this time, trusting my instincts above all else.

And Pico? Well, he became more than just a pet. He was a little guide, a tiny voice of truth in a world full of confusion. I realized that sometimes, the answers we need are right in front of us, even if they come in unexpected forms.

The lesson here is simple: trust yourself. Trust your instincts, even when the world around you tries to cloud your judgment. And sometimes, the universe has a funny way of showing us the truth—whether we’re ready for it or not.

So, if you’re in a situation where you feel unsure or lost, remember this: sometimes, the truth is right in front of you, even in the most unexpected places. And when you finally see it, you’ll have the strength to make the right decision.

If this story resonated with you, share it with someone who might need to hear it. You never know who might be listening.
